MARRIAGE COUNSELING Relationship Therapy • Couple Therapy
When it seems you are becoming more hurt, angrier, or more distant from the the most important person in your life, it is likely that your relationship could benefit from professional help. In addition to your group process you may find it helpful to do some work with your spouse in a couple format. Should you decide to get that help from me, I will, from the first couple session, try to make your experience safe enough for you to share any and all feelings that might be stirred by therapeutic interactions. I will also work towards throwing light on and changing how you communicate your most vulnerable feelings with one another. As therapy progresses, we will explore increasingly how various hurtful events from childhood and other previous relationships seem to be priming you to experience undue fear or pain or to respond to your spouse in a destructive manner, usually by either shutting down or by attacking verbally. In most cases, focus on difficulties in communicating feelings, while examining age-old relational patterns, results in couples finding new and more rewarding ways to establish and maintain emotional intimacy. I hope these few words will provide you with some ideas as to how marriage counseling might work. However, it is the actual experience of engaging in a few couple sessions that will provide the best sense as to whether this process might really help you reestablish that deeper and more intimate connection you long for.
